planted at least 15 tulips in pots last fall and stored them in the garage over winter. after unknown mongrels dug up the majority of the bulbs (while in the garage), I was left with three healthy plants. then a rabbit beheaded an about-to-bloom bud, and left it in the pot so it knew what evil felt like. So this is one of the remaining two heroes. She shines even as she cuddles up for bed.

Planted these out a week or so ago. So far, so growing! Can’t wait for future salads..I can feel my past salad-hating self shaking her head in shame.

this self seeded common blue violet is charming the hell out of me. may dig her up and add her to a garden bed. multiply baby! multiply!

This plant brought me absolute and pure joy today. It’s a trillium. It can take 7 years to flower. That’s the reason I’ve never brought one home from a plant store. But it was almost exactly 7 years ago that I dipped my toe in the gardening space. My toe must has slipped because my entire self went with it….(a rare post that has many more words than this exerpt, click for more).

I swear I’m not forcing my passions on her. She voluntarily went in there and start examining stuff. But she also stops to smell the blooming lilacs and viburnum with me and excitedly yells “flowers” at all plants. It’s almost like she’s my daughter or something.

Let the preventative measures commence. I don’t want to say this is war, not when I plan to sow a “sacrificial crop” of nasturtium so they don’t go hungry. But dudes, I gotta look out for the plants, too!

The first plants of the woodland garden went in today. So many of the seedlings growing up in the greenhouse will graduate here and fill in the gaps. I don’t like to be able to see soil in a bed. ALL PLANTS EVERYWHERE!

A tray of future vitamins and minerals (mixed lettuce and spinach, oh and sage). I put these out in the protected raised bed to harden off. I’ve also resowed more lettuce. Going to try this whole “successional planting” scheme this year.

so proud of you wee babes! That empty space was where Verbana Hastata sproutlings lived. They were potted on with room to grow.

april 23

get OUTTA here with that strawberry baby wee flower! come greet us, you future sweet juice blast. I hope my kid’s fingers get to it before the rabbit’s teeth!

silky and billowy and sexy AF daffodils just made their grand entrance. now i must look for the label to figure out what it is because I’m obsessed.

i had given up on these snowflakes. I think they’re supposed to come before daffodils. Chalking it up to another lesson in “the label’s not always right.”
